I found these sciatica exercises on youtube which apparently are pretty effective. It’s called Mckensie method and I am going to be on the look out for stories on how useful this technique actually is for shifting sciatica symptoms.

The pain is not a …
The pain is not a sign of muscle damage, but there’s a good chance you have a disc herniation that is causing the nerve irritation and pain. The impact to the spine from running or heavy exertion could make the disc herniation worse, possibly very suddenly and then you might not only have pain but also severe muscle weakness and possibly lasting nerve damage. I recommend you definitely avoid running while you still have pain and possibly discontinue it altogether to help avoid future problems.
So I have pain, and …
So I have pain, and in part 2, yes, when I extend my leg sitting in a chair, pain down my leg. My question with this condition, is the pain actually causing any problem in my leg muscle/damage, or just the feeling of pain. For example, if I want to run 5 miles, is there any risk to my legs, beyond the discomfort of the pain?
To modify downward …
To modify downward facing dog to a point where it wouldn’t be likely to aggravate sciatica it wouldn’t be recognizable as the same pose. If yoga in general is helpful for you, by all means do it, but just eliminate the forward bending poses.
Could you tell me …
Could you tell me if there is any way to “modify” the downward facing dog pose so that it does not aggravate my sciatica. I find yoga to be helpful with this condition, but the forward bends are problematic and painful. Thank you for your input! Your videos are extremely helpful!

Is it possible that …
Is it possible that using an inversion table which I have could trigger sciatica or the piriformis syndrome? I’ve used one regularly for several months which helped low back pain quite well but then had sciatica or this piriformis condition for the last week. The inversion table didn’t seem to help it either especially when the pain is worst in the morning.

Part 2 to …
Part 2 to PAREDAS.Your disc protrusions (where the disc bulges back towards the spinal cord and nerves) are relatively minor.I think your pain may be more due to the arthritic problems in the facet joints and the ociated inflammation.I suggest you start with a chiropractor rather than an orthopedist.Chiropractic treatment often helps with facet joint problems, and with what you have, surgery is usually not a good option if your can avoid it.Click on my name to send an email for more info.
Dessication means …
Dessication means that the discs have lost fluid and is an early sign of degeneration.Disc space narrowing means that the discs are not as thick as they should be, also a sign of degeneration.Facet hypertrophy means there is extra bone growth around the joints at the back of the spine – a sign of chronic arthritis. Fluid in the facets means there is inflammatory swelling of the joints. See part 2.

(sorry, i meant to say read above, I ran out of remaining characters so I had to use 2 comments); L5-S1 shows bilateral facet hypertrophy. and there is a 1-2 mm central disc protrusion. would it be wise to go see an orthopedic surgion? Could you please explain the MRI results to me?
Hi doc, I was in a …
Hi doc, I was in a car accident in April and did about 4 months of physical therapy, but was still in quite a bit of pain in my lower back and buttocks area so I had an MRI done. I got the results from my MRI,the findings were: Mild disc desiccation is noted throughout the lumbar spine, w/moderate disc space narrowing at the L1-2 level; L1 thru L4 shows bilateral face hypertrophy; L4-L5 shows 2mm circumferential disc bulge, mild bilateral facet hypertrophy, with fluid in the facets; see below
Most people do …
Most people do recover sufficiently well to return to most activities. Basketball and running are high-impact activities that are hard on the discs, so it will be important to take very good care of your back if you want to do those things. Good luck!
Unfortunately, the …
Unfortunately, the cause of MP is not well understood, so there’s not any specific exercises for it. I suggest stretching the TFL/ITB, as this sometimes helps. I don’t have video, and since YT now has twice blocked my response with a URL where you can get a picture, I suggest you type “TFL stretches” into Google for info. Other possible things that may help are chiropractic and acupuncture, but there’s nothing that I’ve found that’s a sure thing. Good luck!

Hi,
Although pain …
Hi,
Although pain that skips the thigh is usually not true sciatica from a disc herniation, your symptoms could be referred pain from muscles in the buttock area that have become tight from limping.Likewise, you can get numbness in the feet referred from muscles in the lower leg that have probably been tense from hobbling around. You may be able to poke around in the muscles with your fingers and find points that increase your symptoms. Massaging those points with deep pressure should help.

Hi
I have had sciatica pain in the past but has mostly gone over the past couple of years. I recently broke my second to smallest toe on my left foot and did not rest it. since then I have had alot of pain in my left leg near the front which at 1st thought it was mucular but now I think it is related to hobbling arround and agravating my back. Although the pain is not in my thigh at all, is this possible? Also both my big toes are slightly numb

Shurodey,
To continue, as far as how long it takes for sciatica to subside, it varies greatly depending on the severity of the uderlying cause(s). In a few cases, the disc damage is too severe to get relief from NSAIDs and exercise, and such cases often require either spinal decompression or surgery to relieve the pain. In most cases though, with consistent exercise and avoidance of heavy exertion, symptoms will subside in anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
I am female. I have pain from my lower back down into my buttock, into my groin area and it then radiates down into my leg and at times into my foot. This is right side. I have some numbness in my upper thigh ,inner and outer, from whatever is going on. Sitting is difficult, and riding in a car is not good at all. Hard seats seem to agrivate this a good bit. I have had e-rays recently and they showed mild deterioration of the spine as well as mild arthritis. The Dr said neither were anything to be concerned about. Any idea what my problem might be? This has gone on for over a year now. Heat helps some, over the conter pain meds help some. Cold seems to make it worse. I just took a dosepack of Prednisone which did not seem to help much at all. Sure would like to find something that will help. I suspect Sciatica but this seems more than just that.
