Are you looking for fast and pain-free sciatica treatment? This has been my aim for the last few years and I have trawled just about every site available on the subject.

I reckon that I must have spent over 6 months hours reading info and advice on the web about how to get relief from sciatica. Although there were points when I thought I’d found the perfect cure, the sciatica would eventually come back. This never-ending process of trial and error without success can really wear down your hopes of recovery.

Then one day I was on the web and coincidentally I saw a book and dvd pack called “Lose the Back Pain”. I thought it was a chance worth taking and bought myself a copy. It turns out that it’s book is a sciatica treatment bible, and has worked wonders for me.

have had some pretty horrible sciatica pain for abou 6 weeks now, I use Ice and advil, the pain isnt as severe the last couple of days. I want to exercise but should I use an elliptical trainer?

As far as exercise goes with sciatica, exercise usually is better than rest for healing. Make sure you are stretching properly beforehand and try to take it easy to see if you are aggravating the sciatic nerve or not.
The elliptical machine is low-impact and should not make your sciatic pain worse, but take it easy at first to make sure.

What are pinched sciatic nerve symptoms? Can you tell me or point me to something that describes the causes of sciatica?

Pinched sciatic nerve symptoms include these: pain in the lower back and/or buttock and possibly radiating down the leg even as far as the foot. Sciatic pain may be, shooting or burning,
sharp or dull, non-stop or intermittent. In other words, quite variable. There may be numbness or tingling (pins and needles) radiating from the lower back and upper buttock down the back of the thigh to the back of the leg. There could be a feeling of weakness in the leg or foot such that walking may be difficult and painful.

Actually, sciatica is a symptom of a few possible conditions; it is not a condition on its own. There are four most common answers to what causes sciatica and a number of less common ones. Sciatic pain results from a pinched sciatica nerve. Symptoms are typically felt anywhere from the low back/buttocks to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. There may, in many cases, be no pain in the lower back.

Sciatica results from irritation of the sciatic nerve. (Remember, this may be from one of a number of possible causes.) The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body running from the lumbar spinal cord in the low back, through the buttock area to the knee where it branches into two nerves that continue down to the feet. Sciatica is commonly felt only on one side of the body.

Are there any particularly good exercises for relieving sciatica? I think there may be a muscle imbalance involved in my case. A video would be helpful, if possible.

Exercises for relieving sciatica can often be very effective when the cause is related to a muscle imbalance, as it very often is. If you learn about and begin to work on correcting any muscle imbalances, improvement can begin very quickly and sciatic pain can sometimes be eliminated within a few weeks. I have added the URL in the resources box for a good video showing a very effective exercise for sciatica

Before somebody say something, I did go to the doctors for my lower back pain but none of them did anything, not even an X ray… one sent me to rheumatologist, other said I need to excersive (even if I do!!), other said it’s in my mind… so my husband convinced me to go to a chiropractor, which I was very nervous about. I also have neck pain, probably a pinched nerve by the symptoms, but the MRI (for the neck) will be next week and no, I DON’T WANT THE NECK manipulation AT ALL. I’ll try anything else.
Back to the lower back, I went to my second visit today and I do start to feel better from my sciatica, which would hurt me after a day of work and I had felt nothing in the past 2 days and even my neck seems to be getting better after each adjustment for the sciatica. Is it possible that sciatica was causing my neck pain?
Also, he said I need between 15 to 20 visits, but everybody says the normal is 3 to 4. Even his partner had said in the first appt before the X rays, but them 1 week later, the number incresead, and they said it was easy to fix anyway. Is it ok that much? How do a chiropractor know when it’s fixed? how do I know?
Last, but not least, today, around 2 hours after leaving the office, I started feeling this pain on my rib under my breast. I feel it when I breath a little deeper… is it normal?
I’m still not so comfortable with this kind of treatment, but I don’t have insurance, and the community service I got, just keeps me passing around does nothing and it takes me months to get an appt. I got the MRI because I was crying and begging desperated with my 1-month neck pain that was giving me nightmares about of what could be. That’s all I got and anyway it’s gonna be quite expensive, but of course, it still more affordable then each visit or exam to a private doctor.
To the 3th answer: no, it doesn’t sound reasonable to me, that’s why I came here to ask if it was normal or not.

to the 4th answer, yes, I did get the referral to the physiotherapist. He was the one who sent me to the rheumatologist without even check me, and if I say something "you’re young… just exercise, it’s in your mind, i think you have arthristis".. and so on… I’m 28, by the way…
Oh, and this office has really good references. Friends of my husband are some, that’s why he wanted me to go there. But i took me a while to be "convinced" …

The neck pain can occur because of a change in pull due to joints being released elsewhere in the spine. This does happen on occasion but your neck pain is most likely unrelated.
It really does depend on what causes the Sciatica. If it is from a disc bulge in my experience manipulative treatment to the bulged area will not speed up the course of the recovery. Exercises to strengthen the core and paravertebral muscles would be far more helpful. This involves time. When I treat disc bulges I initially see someone every 5 -7 days and gradually space the treatments out to every 4- 6 weeks + give them a heep of exercise to do.
If you are getting symptoms from nerve root irritation due to a deep curve in your lumbar spine it should resolve quickly with manipulation and some exercise to lengthen the Psoas Muscle.
Piriformis tightening can also cause sciatica. Again this should resolve quickly with stretches and exercise.

If the goal posts have suddenly moved from 4 treatments to 15 I suggest you move your Sciatica to another practitioner.

In the US as well as chiropractors you have Osteopaths. Although most of them don’t do manual medicine about 5% do. If you can see one of these this is another option. They are likely to be more expensive than chiropractors but its unlikely you will need 15 treatments.
Also can you get a referral to physio-therapy?

Edit:
Ok the physio option didn’t work for you. Its unclear about whether the rheumatologist made these comments or the physio.
I’d suggest another chiropractor. All of the conditions I described would improve or resolve by regularly attending pilates.

Symptoms include: Severe pain in hip to back thigh, foot/leg pointing outward, leg is weak/ severe constant pain (resting or walking). Short leg, one doctor concluded she has Sciatica.

Spine is clean nothing noticeable and back does not hurt.

Is it possible this person has a dislocation in her hip/leg?
(All the doctors have paying more attention to the spine and never looked at her leg.)

Sounds like a nerve entrapment, probably within the hip, due to inflammation. Best of Luck

no silly answers plz

I am just recovering from it.
Mine was caused by muscles tightness and spasm around the area where I have two buldging discs and a crack in one of them.
It depends what is causing your sciatica. Usually the worst sciatica is when a buldging disc presses on the nerve in which case a surgery is the only option. Did the doctors say what caused the sciatica in your case. Do you have buldging discs? It is crucial to know it as the treatment will depend on this. If your sciatica is caused by muscles spasm a physiotherapy or an osteopath is the best answer. They do deep tissue massages to loosen the muscles. At home you can lay on tennis balls and put them where the pain is the biggest -this area is your trigger point. I really wish you good luck with it. My sciatica is lasting 7 months now but I am almost recovered. Don’t leave it like that! Have you had an MRI scan to exclude any discs involvement?

I dont need tips on sciatica, kidney stones or cramps- I just want to know if I should take motrin or not. Thanks

yes you can, but you REALLY need somethng stronger. Tylenol and Ibuprofen will help, but the ER visit with a friend of mine last night said vicodin is in order…….the pain comes from two things, the muscles of the ureter squeezing the stone as the spasm and the actual stone scraping the ureter…….go to the doctor hun….this is a time for serious pain killers until it is passed and it could take a few days, better to go now then wait til an ambulance has to take you (yeah, that was yesterday too)
