Are you looking for fast and pain-free sciatica treatment? This has been my aim for the last few years and I have trawled just about every site available on the subject.

I reckon that I must have spent over 6 months hours reading info and advice on the web about how to get relief from sciatica. Although there were points when I thought I’d found the perfect cure, the sciatica would eventually come back. This never-ending process of trial and error without success can really wear down your hopes of recovery.

Then one day I was on the web and coincidentally I saw a book and dvd pack called “Lose the Back Pain”. I thought it was a chance worth taking and bought myself a copy. It turns out that it’s book is a sciatica treatment bible, and has worked wonders for me.

Does anyone else have Sciatica (nerve down the leg that radiates almost electrical shock feeling and numbness in the foot or leg)? It doesn’t feel like my back hurts, but it’s my buttock, one side only. Sometimes the pain is so bad I almost cry. What can you do to treat this and how long will it last? I have osteo-arthritis in my lower back, and sometimes I feel this pain may never go away because of the condition of my spine. I truly feel for anyone who has this condition. I’ve heard of it before, but never imagined so much pain!!!

The most annoying symptom of sciatica is of course – the pain. Most people describe it as a deep, severe pain that starts low on one side of the back and then moves down to the butt and the leg. You probably feel it worsen when you sit down or stand for a long time, or when you stand up after sitting low. Many things can make it worse also – coughing, sneezing, bending and even laughing. Here is a guide exercises for sciatica – the simple stretch to eliminate sciatic pain immediately.

Here’s how to do it, step by step:

 1. Lye flat on your back. Once you are on your back, lift your right leg and place it over your left knee (the right ankle resting on the left knee).
2. Reach through with your right hand in between your legs and hug your left knee.
3. Take your right hand around the outside of your left knee and hug it. Your palms are now hugging your left knee together.
4. With both your hands, pull your left knee towards your chest.
5. Repeat on the other side with your right knee.

How to make it more effective

You can take this basic stretch and modify it to make it more effective.

 1. Lye flat on your back and place your right leg over your left knee. This time – move your right leg so that your right knee is over your left knee. It’s like crossing your legs – just lying down.
2. Hug your left knee with both your hands and pull your knee to your chest.

Before you start your exercises for sciatica – please remember that even if this helps you (and it will!) – You are only temporarily relieving your pain and you are not curing the root cause of your sciatica!

i have had it for years but didnt realise what it was till a few days ago, it only ever bothers me in pregnancy due to the extra preasure on my spine and the slip disk (and yes i know i know its not the actual disk thats slipped) putting preasure on my sciatic nerve, this is my 2nd pregnancy i had the same problem with my 1st but its more painfull this time round, and last time it casued my labour to be extremly painfull not even epidural took the pain away so i am scared its going to be last time, i just wanna know is there any cure what so ever for it,
in my local hospital they only have a 3 water birth rooms, dont want water birth anyway cant have epidural and if i hadnt of had that in my 1st pregnancy i would of passed out with the pain

there is no cure for sciatica. However you can make yourself a bit more comfortable with tepid showers, wearing a body brace to support your growing bump and if your doctor recommends pain relief, go for it, if you are in the later stage of the pregnancy. You should discuss a birthing plan with your midwife, and if possible a water birth would possibly make things a lot easier for you, if this is available at your hospital.

im 20 and last november my mri scan showed 3 bulging discs and 1 herniated disc on my L4-L5. after months of phisio the sciatica pains were reduced but the initial nerve pain is still there.

My mother in law has herniated discs as well. She has found much relief from her inversion table and she just started myofacial release. After 8 yrs of pain, she says that it is helping her greatly. She also has found relief with muscle balance therapy.

herniated discs are complicated and people who have found the most relief, usually take a multi treatment approach to their pain, or a combination approach.

The underlying cause of the herniated disc needs to be addressed. Why did your disc herniate in the first place?

Barring trauma, muscle imbalances in the body are the second leading cause of back pain. Chances are, you have never heard of muscle imbalances and worse you don’t even know that your own muscles are out of balance. But the reality is that everyone has muscle imbalances to some degree – regardless of age, sex, or level of fitness. No one is perfect. And even if you did manage to achieve perfection, you could not stay there for long.

In simple terms, a muscle imbalance occurs when you have overdeveloped and tight muscles in one area of your body while the opposing muscles are weak and stretched out of their normal position. These imbalances can happen anywhere on the body and often develop as the result of the routine things you do while on the job, playing sports, or engaging in other activities you enjoy.

As your muscles get more and more out of balance, you end up pulling your self out of proper alignment thus producing uneven more stress and causing additional wear and tear on muscles, ligaments, joints, and even the spine.

Almost all of us live our lives with chronic unrecognized muscular imbalances and while it does take time for muscle imbalances to cause a symptomatic condition the first signs of trouble are evident on our bodies in the form of "postural dysfunctions". Postural dysfunction can be seen in the abnormal position on the pelvis, head, neck, shoulder and even in the curvature of the spine.

Once a postural dysfunction has developed, your body cannot go on for long this way before you will begin to experience problems. That is why you should never just cover up the pain or put off addressing your condition. In other words, if you are in your 40s, don’t wait until you’re 60’s to decide you have a problem.

Try this analogy: If you drive your car with the wheels out of alignment, the tread on your tires is going to wear unevenly. If you don’t get an alignment, eventually you’re going to have a blowout. The same principle holds true for your back and other areas of your body.

So now what do you do to address your muscle imbalances? You can perform a self assessment at losethebackpain.com, find out which muscle imbalances you have, then start on a treatment program of specific, targeted exercises and stretches which will get your body and muscles back into its proper alignment.

To view some great free videos on some stretches you can perform to help alleviate some of the pain, and to find out more about muscle imbalances you can go to: http://www.losethebackpain.com/treatments/musclebalancetherapy.html

I have extreme sharp pain in my lower right back, and the pain shoots down my leg into my knee aswell.

What should I do? Are there any treatments or should i see a doctor or a physio?

first off bless your heart, sciatica is absolutely awful. I suffer with it on a regular basis, and I would not wish it upon my worse enemy.

First off, a trip to the doctor would be a wise idea. He will prescribe pain medication and muscle relaxers. If it is unbearable, you are unable to walk on your own, or are losing control of your urinary tract or bowels, go to the ER immediately…even calling an ambulance if needed so that they can get you out of the house. Extreme pain may raise your blood pressure to dangerous levels as well, so don’t wait until you are close to having a stroke before you seek medical attention.
Secondly, bed rest. You will probably need to have someone there to help take care of you and whatever housework/childcare that needs to be done.
Third, elevate below the knee and use a heating pad. This will help relieve some of the pressure on your back.

Usually it will take a few days for the worse to pass, but once it does, you will find that walking and stretching will help tremendously (I usually will get on the riding mower and mow the yard..the vibration does wonders)

If you have chronic issues like I do, after you consult a doctor and have a thorough exam, you may want to look into chiropractic care. I hear alot of people have great success with that. I have not personally tried it (distrust…but that’s not a phobia that I push on others)

I hope you are feeling better soon!!

I have a slipped disc and a sciatica for 2 months now. NHS referred me to an osteopath but today he told me if I don’t agree to have an operation he will discharge me, so he did so. I did not want to have an injection nor operation. He said if his treatments have not improve my condition by now I need an operation. But today I went privately to a physio and she said I don’t need an operation just a good physio who can take care of me. Who should I trust more? To be honest I wasn’t happy with the treatment I had from the osteopath as he never did any massage on me, I saw him once every 2 weeks (5 or 6 times altogether). Any advise? I will have a MRI scan next week by the way.

the NHS usually only offer a short course of treatment. if things don’t get any better then the usually refer you. if you really don’t want to have the operation then i would go with the physio, but i guess if after that it still isn’t better then you would be back to needing the operation…..its up to you who you trust really.

best of luck x
