I have been undiagnosed with sciatica but I am 100% positive that I’ve had it because of my symptoms (in my front right thigh), it started in around oct 2010 and it was an on/off numbness. Now it’s back and it hurts pretty bad. Any idea how to get rid of it? It never hurt enough to go to the doctor but I did suggestions online and they didn’t work. Thanks!

If you feel the pain go down your leg or wrap around your hip, you may be suffering from sciatica. In it’s worst state, you will feel painful electrical charges in your foot as the nerve wraps around your pelvis and hip and back down the back of the leg through the buttocks.

Please see your doctor for a muscle relaxant like flexerall only by prescription to stop your muscles from squeezing the nerve on your left side. You can use a combination of non prescribed medication to try and hit the areas that are most annoying; however, 50mg-150mg indomethicin oral or anal works the absolute best for your back.

1. I used to use a combination of medications which included 400mg Ibuprofen 4x a day with food. This takes the swelling and inflammation down. DO NOT exceed1600mg in one day and you may need prilosec for stomach protection as ALL ANTI INFLAMMATORIES are difficult on the stomach. ***You can use Tylenol with Ibuprofen and Aspirin watch for daily maximums & don’t exceed.

2. Robaxacet is Tylenol (acetominophen) combined with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)…this also comes with codeine on request from the pharmacist. This only relaxes any tight muscles around the pain and helps reduce some pain. You can use Robaxacet with Ibuprofen and Aspirin, BUT NOT Tylenol as it’s already an ingredient in this pill.

3. Robaxacyl is Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) combines with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)…this has a blood thinning active ingredient and isn’t ideal for anyone under age 16 years or complications with blood pressure, ailments, etc. This both takes down the inflammation as well as treats the pain. You can use Robaxacyl with Ibuprofen and Tylenol, BUT NOT Aspirin as it’s already an ingredient in this pill.
————————————–…
4. Aleve is a Nonsteroidal Anti Inflammatory (Naproxen) which will helps reduce the inflammation, and as the inflammation decreases so does the pain; BUT you CANNOT mix this drug with any of the above mentioned safely.

5. Dynamint has been used on horses legs for years, but it does an amazing job on sore muscles. It’s ingredients are Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil , Tea Tree Oil and Calendula Oil.

6. Deep Cold Gold is an alternative rub that works very well on tight aching back & low back tendons.

It’s serious as you well know from the pain. You will need to treat it with ICE for 20 minutes on and off every 2.5 hours in your butt cheek and the heart of the pain. You can put a heating pad on your low back afterwards.

You will need to see your doctor if this progressively gets worse. You can request Flexerill (muscle relaxant) to relaxe the muscles from contracting around the pinched nerve. You may also require pain medicaiton depending on the severity.

I do not find much comfort with the chiropractor but it doesn’t hurt to check in with yours for normal maintenance and his opinion on sciatica so you can decide what road you want to take.

Physio, Kinesiology, and Yoga are the best for treatment. I usually hit the hot tub and steam room at the pool and stretch in the warm environment.

Lie on your back and pull your knee to your chest and hold for 20 secs. Do it to the other side too and repeat.

Grab both knees to your chest and hold for 20 secs. Bring to the center, and gently rock to the left side and the right side still holding on to your knees for approximately 10 times and repeat. This relieves a lot of the discomfort.

You can also learn to stretch and touch your toes lying on the floor with you bum. Stetch to your shin and hold 20 secs, stretch to your ankle and hold 20 secs, stretch to your arch and hold for 20 secs, and eventually you’ll be able to hold the bottom of your feet.

I find these exercises not only alleviate my suffering, but it prevents the re-occurrence. I know because as long as I do them I never even have an episode, but it takes a long time to heal the memory of back pain.

The main symptom of sciatica is pain that radiates through the buttock and down the back of the thigh and leg. The pain may stop below the knee or continue right down to the foot. Pain from sciatica can change: it can be shooting or burning, sharp or dull, non-stop, or intermittent. Pain is usually only felt on one side of the body.

You most likely have mechanical back syndrome, but the treatment is the same for Sciatica. In it’s worst state, you will feel painful electrical charges in your foot as the nerve wraps around your pelvis and hip and back down the back of the leg through the buttocks.

Anytime you feel numbness or tingling in an extremity it is VITAL that you get to a doctor as soon as you can to have it checked out. If there is an impingement that cuts off the circulation, you can lose the limb, so please get to a doctor.

Not officially diagnosed, but I have looked up the symptoms myself and concluded it to be sciatica. I have a mild case. I am 29 and in decent shape. The only concern is that the pain comes and goes but on a month to month basis. I joined a gym for about a 2 week period and my back felt the best when I was working out. Sometimes it can be disappear months. My only concern is this flaring up during BCT. Is this something I should be worried about?

My friend if yo have not been officially diagnosed, then it will not DQ you from the service. If you join and it flares up in BCT, then you will be sent to the hospital. If you are not able to complete BCT training, you will be discharge for medical reasons. Im not telling you what to do, but if you plan to join, i would do so before you are officially diagnosed. There is a chance it may not flare up and you can have a great Military Career. You are joining at a late age, so there are a lot of things that can go against you during training, but the only way to find out is JUST DO IT! I just retired this year at 39. Good luck to you whatever decide.

I think I have sciatica, or at least my doctor says so.

For the past 6 weeks, I’ve experienced intense, ongoing pain starting at my buttocks and going all the way down my left leg virtually into my foot.

There are no symptoms on the right-side.

I’m almost certain that I caused it myself by over-exerting at the gym. I started working out a few months ago, doing aerobic-type exercises and some light weights. I am 53, small body (65kg) and had not done any gym work for probably 10 years. One of the exercises I was doing with weights was leg curls. I think this is what caused the problem even though I was only using the second lightest weights, and only doing 2 sets of 6 curls at a time. Soon after my last session in early Aug, I started feeling this pain so I’m pretty sure this is what caused it.

My symptoms are:

•Unable to put on trousers, shoes or socks without experiencing intense pain – so intense that I now have to contort myself backwards and bend my knees inwards to be able to do these simple tasks.

•Intense pain when sitting – the worst being bus rides (even short ones) and driving. These have both become excruciatingly painful experiences. Last night for example, I drove home from my daughter’s place: about 20 mins and when I got home, I was in agony. Last week my wife and I were going to a restaurant and I was driving. Soon after setting off, the pain became so intense, that we had to stop the car and pull over to the side of the road so that my wife could take over. As a passenger, it’s only by pushing the seat as far back as it will go, can I get comfortable.

•Unable to bend down or cut my toenails.

•A pinching sensation on my calf when walking or generally moving around – it feels like the calf muscle is being gripped in a vice.

•Pins and needles like sensation in left foot, when walking.

•Waking early morning around 5.00am, with intense pain in the left leg area from the knee down. Sometimes, it’s so bad, that I can’t get back to sleep.

•Sneezing, coughing or similar action requiring muscle contractions causes intense pain.

•Getting into bed causes pain.

My doctor has told me that it’s sciatica and that there’s no need for me to see a specialist. He says that it’s quite common and that he’s had it himself and that it will clear up in time. I would believe him if it weren’t for the fact that I’m 99.9% sure that this was caused by gym work, which makes me think maybe it’s more serious than he believes.

He’s put me onto painkillers called FENAC. They work well for about 8 hrs but they cause me stomach probs and I don’t want to rely on them as a long term solution.

I’ve also tried IBOPRUFEN, which too gives temp relief but I’ve never been a pill-popper and wouldn’t like to start now. I’m also concerned because I’m going overseas on an extended holiday for 2 months, in Oct and would hate to be in this situation when I leave

What else could I be doing to ease the pain?

I went to the chiropractor who applied heat and massaged the area. He also put some patches on it that would make the muscles spasm then relax and that seemed to really help. During the day I would wear those disposable heat patches and would try to take pain medications every 4 hours so the pain wouldn’t come on too hard…

Good luck! I know it is literally a pain in the @$$!!

What are pinched sciatic nerve symptoms? Can you tell me or point me to something that describes the causes of sciatica?

Pinched sciatic nerve symptoms include these: pain in the lower back and/or buttock and possibly radiating down the leg even as far as the foot. Sciatic pain may be, shooting or burning,
sharp or dull, non-stop or intermittent. In other words, quite variable. There may be numbness or tingling (pins and needles) radiating from the lower back and upper buttock down the back of the thigh to the back of the leg. There could be a feeling of weakness in the leg or foot such that walking may be difficult and painful.

Actually, sciatica is a symptom of a few possible conditions; it is not a condition on its own. There are four most common answers to what causes sciatica and a number of less common ones. Sciatic pain results from a pinched sciatica nerve. Symptoms are typically felt anywhere from the low back/buttocks to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. There may, in many cases, be no pain in the lower back.

Sciatica results from irritation of the sciatic nerve. (Remember, this may be from one of a number of possible causes.) The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body running from the lumbar spinal cord in the low back, through the buttock area to the knee where it branches into two nerves that continue down to the feet. Sciatica is commonly felt only on one side of the body.

Before somebody say something, I did go to the doctors for my lower back pain but none of them did anything, not even an X ray… one sent me to rheumatologist, other said I need to excersive (even if I do!!), other said it’s in my mind… so my husband convinced me to go to a chiropractor, which I was very nervous about. I also have neck pain, probably a pinched nerve by the symptoms, but the MRI (for the neck) will be next week and no, I DON’T WANT THE NECK manipulation AT ALL. I’ll try anything else.
Back to the lower back, I went to my second visit today and I do start to feel better from my sciatica, which would hurt me after a day of work and I had felt nothing in the past 2 days and even my neck seems to be getting better after each adjustment for the sciatica. Is it possible that sciatica was causing my neck pain?
Also, he said I need between 15 to 20 visits, but everybody says the normal is 3 to 4. Even his partner had said in the first appt before the X rays, but them 1 week later, the number incresead, and they said it was easy to fix anyway. Is it ok that much? How do a chiropractor know when it’s fixed? how do I know?
Last, but not least, today, around 2 hours after leaving the office, I started feeling this pain on my rib under my breast. I feel it when I breath a little deeper… is it normal?
I’m still not so comfortable with this kind of treatment, but I don’t have insurance, and the community service I got, just keeps me passing around does nothing and it takes me months to get an appt. I got the MRI because I was crying and begging desperated with my 1-month neck pain that was giving me nightmares about of what could be. That’s all I got and anyway it’s gonna be quite expensive, but of course, it still more affordable then each visit or exam to a private doctor.
To the 3th answer: no, it doesn’t sound reasonable to me, that’s why I came here to ask if it was normal or not.

to the 4th answer, yes, I did get the referral to the physiotherapist. He was the one who sent me to the rheumatologist without even check me, and if I say something "you’re young… just exercise, it’s in your mind, i think you have arthristis".. and so on… I’m 28, by the way…
Oh, and this office has really good references. Friends of my husband are some, that’s why he wanted me to go there. But i took me a while to be "convinced" …

The neck pain can occur because of a change in pull due to joints being released elsewhere in the spine. This does happen on occasion but your neck pain is most likely unrelated.
It really does depend on what causes the Sciatica. If it is from a disc bulge in my experience manipulative treatment to the bulged area will not speed up the course of the recovery. Exercises to strengthen the core and paravertebral muscles would be far more helpful. This involves time. When I treat disc bulges I initially see someone every 5 -7 days and gradually space the treatments out to every 4- 6 weeks + give them a heep of exercise to do.
If you are getting symptoms from nerve root irritation due to a deep curve in your lumbar spine it should resolve quickly with manipulation and some exercise to lengthen the Psoas Muscle.
Piriformis tightening can also cause sciatica. Again this should resolve quickly with stretches and exercise.

If the goal posts have suddenly moved from 4 treatments to 15 I suggest you move your Sciatica to another practitioner.

In the US as well as chiropractors you have Osteopaths. Although most of them don’t do manual medicine about 5% do. If you can see one of these this is another option. They are likely to be more expensive than chiropractors but its unlikely you will need 15 treatments.
Also can you get a referral to physio-therapy?

Edit:
Ok the physio option didn’t work for you. Its unclear about whether the rheumatologist made these comments or the physio.
I’d suggest another chiropractor. All of the conditions I described would improve or resolve by regularly attending pilates.

Spine is clean nothing noticeable and back does not hurt.

Is it possible this person has a dislocation in her hip/leg?
(All the doctors have paying more attention to the spine and never looked at her leg.)

Sounds like a nerve entrapment, probably within the hip, due to inflammation. Best of Luck

no silly answers plz

I am just recovering from it.
Mine was caused by muscles tightness and spasm around the area where I have two buldging discs and a crack in one of them.
It depends what is causing your sciatica. Usually the worst sciatica is when a buldging disc presses on the nerve in which case a surgery is the only option. Did the doctors say what caused the sciatica in your case. Do you have buldging discs? It is crucial to know it as the treatment will depend on this. If your sciatica is caused by muscles spasm a physiotherapy or an osteopath is the best answer. They do deep tissue massages to loosen the muscles. At home you can lay on tennis balls and put them where the pain is the biggest -this area is your trigger point. I really wish you good luck with it. My sciatica is lasting 7 months now but I am almost recovered. Don’t leave it like that! Have you had an MRI scan to exclude any discs involvement?

ps- sitting for long periods seems to trigger it and I possibly even exercising. But definitely sitting for prolonged periods I notice triggers it. It isn’t unbearable just a dull ache in my glutes that feels like it could be stretched, but stretching doesn’t help too much. THANKS!!! 10 poionts

could really be either. True sciatica is less common in pregnancy than pelvic related pain- or so I read on babycenter. I would get an adjustment from a chiropractor and a good massage. Also calcium-magnesium supplement and lots of water could help.

Hi

I have suffered with Sciatica on and off for a few years and it has always affected the right side of my body, i.e. right side of lower back and right side of leg.

Since last October I have been suffering with the other side but the symptoms are not the same.

This time after sitting, there is a weakness in my left leg from around my hip / buttock and down around my shins. Sometimes I feel, particularly when walking upstairs, that my leg will not support me. I do not get this when getting up in a morning as previously, morning was my worst time, nor if I am sitting with my legs up on the sofa. It seems as it is the pressure from the seat of the chair pressing on the back of my my thigh when sitting which is causing the problem. If I take ibuprofen, I don’t feel it for a day or so but slowly it returns. It is worse if I wear shoes will heels.

I sit down a lot during the day at my job and I am aware that this is probably not helping. I need to take exercise which I do my using a treadmill but I find that I am not able to do this at the moment as it seems to make matters worse.

The other type of sciatica was caused by a nerve being pinched in my back, but if this is a form of sciatica, where is the nerve being pinched this time. It would be useful to know this as I can then apply treatment to that area (ice packs and heat etc).

I have had a couple of sessions with an osteopath and he has made sure that my back is moving freely but I am not sure what else I can do. When I stand and start to walk at first, I limp until my leg has got going.

I have had some tablets prescribed by my GP in the past which help but do these aid recovery or do they mask the pain? If they simply mask the pain I may as well stick to ibuprofen.

Can anyone offer any advice please?

Tony could be on the right track I’ve had both a bad back which I suffer from but it was really bad last week that was until I had a tooth out. I had an abscess on the root. My back ache has gone really it has, though I think it;’s partly due to the fact that I’ve been doing 30 mins a day on my treadmill at 3.0rpm. It helps enormously.

I have had three back operations in the passed and I find even though it hurts first off exercising walking seems to help. Ask your doctor for advice as you could have damaged reflexes in your right leg and you need to know that it is alright to go on your treadmill.

My own consultant and physio recommend it daily (walking that is ha ha).
