What are pinched sciatic nerve symptoms? Can you tell me or point me to something that describes the causes of sciatica?
Pinched sciatic nerve symptoms include these: pain in the lower back and/or buttock and possibly radiating down the leg even as far as the foot. Sciatic pain may be, shooting or burning,
sharp or dull, non-stop or intermittent. In other words, quite variable. There may be numbness or tingling (pins and needles) radiating from the lower back and upper buttock down the back of the thigh to the back of the leg. There could be a feeling of weakness in the leg or foot such that walking may be difficult and painful.
Actually, sciatica is a symptom of a few possible conditions; it is not a condition on its own. There are four most common answers to what causes sciatica and a number of less common ones. Sciatic pain results from a pinched sciatica nerve. Symptoms are typically felt anywhere from the low back/buttocks to behind the thigh and radiating down below the knee. There may, in many cases, be no pain in the lower back.
Sciatica results from irritation of the sciatic nerve. (Remember, this may be from one of a number of possible causes.) The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body running from the lumbar spinal cord in the low back, through the buttock area to the knee where it branches into two nerves that continue down to the feet. Sciatica is commonly felt only on one side of the body.
Before somebody say something, I did go to the doctors for my lower back pain but none of them did anything, not even an X ray… one sent me to rheumatologist, other said I need to excersive (even if I do!!), other said it’s in my mind… so my husband convinced me to go to a chiropractor, which I was very nervous about. I also have neck pain, probably a pinched nerve by the symptoms, but the MRI (for the neck) will be next week and no, I DON’T WANT THE NECK manipulation AT ALL. I’ll try anything else.
Back to the lower back, I went to my second visit today and I do start to feel better from my sciatica, which would hurt me after a day of work and I had felt nothing in the past 2 days and even my neck seems to be getting better after each adjustment for the sciatica. Is it possible that sciatica was causing my neck pain?
Also, he said I need between 15 to 20 visits, but everybody says the normal is 3 to 4. Even his partner had said in the first appt before the X rays, but them 1 week later, the number incresead, and they said it was easy to fix anyway. Is it ok that much? How do a chiropractor know when it’s fixed? how do I know?
Last, but not least, today, around 2 hours after leaving the office, I started feeling this pain on my rib under my breast. I feel it when I breath a little deeper… is it normal?
I’m still not so comfortable with this kind of treatment, but I don’t have insurance, and the community service I got, just keeps me passing around does nothing and it takes me months to get an appt. I got the MRI because I was crying and begging desperated with my 1-month neck pain that was giving me nightmares about of what could be. That’s all I got and anyway it’s gonna be quite expensive, but of course, it still more affordable then each visit or exam to a private doctor.
To the 3th answer: no, it doesn’t sound reasonable to me, that’s why I came here to ask if it was normal or not.
to the 4th answer, yes, I did get the referral to the physiotherapist. He was the one who sent me to the rheumatologist without even check me, and if I say something "you’re young… just exercise, it’s in your mind, i think you have arthristis".. and so on… I’m 28, by the way…
Oh, and this office has really good references. Friends of my husband are some, that’s why he wanted me to go there. But i took me a while to be "convinced" …
The neck pain can occur because of a change in pull due to joints being released elsewhere in the spine. This does happen on occasion but your neck pain is most likely unrelated.
It really does depend on what causes the Sciatica. If it is from a disc bulge in my experience manipulative treatment to the bulged area will not speed up the course of the recovery. Exercises to strengthen the core and paravertebral muscles would be far more helpful. This involves time. When I treat disc bulges I initially see someone every 5 -7 days and gradually space the treatments out to every 4- 6 weeks + give them a heep of exercise to do.
If you are getting symptoms from nerve root irritation due to a deep curve in your lumbar spine it should resolve quickly with manipulation and some exercise to lengthen the Psoas Muscle.
Piriformis tightening can also cause sciatica. Again this should resolve quickly with stretches and exercise.
If the goal posts have suddenly moved from 4 treatments to 15 I suggest you move your Sciatica to another practitioner.
In the US as well as chiropractors you have Osteopaths. Although most of them don’t do manual medicine about 5% do. If you can see one of these this is another option. They are likely to be more expensive than chiropractors but its unlikely you will need 15 treatments.
Also can you get a referral to physio-therapy?
Edit:
Ok the physio option didn’t work for you. Its unclear about whether the rheumatologist made these comments or the physio.
I’d suggest another chiropractor. All of the conditions I described would improve or resolve by regularly attending pilates.
After an car accident someone in the car got hurt. About 20 doctors have no idea whats wrong.
Symptoms include: Severe pain in hip to back thigh, foot/leg pointing outward, leg is weak/ severe constant pain (resting or walking). Short leg, one doctor concluded she has Sciatica.
Spine is clean nothing noticeable and back does not hurt.
Is it possible this person has a dislocation in her hip/leg?
(All the doctors have paying more attention to the spine and never looked at her leg.)
Sounds like a nerve entrapment, probably within the hip, due to inflammation. Best of Luck
has anybody had this ? what were ur symptoms i belive i ave it and it is nasty ,i get mild back ache like low down in bk and into right buttock and hip all way into my thigh and down calf and foot ,it varies in sensations the main one is tingling and cramy feelings it even feels like it burns,my doctor has said sounds like nerve trouble ie sciatica cos of the tingling sensatons very annyoing ,jus need sum advce and experinces as iam at my whits end ,thanks very much .love C.xxx
no silly answers plz
I am just recovering from it.
Mine was caused by muscles tightness and spasm around the area where I have two buldging discs and a crack in one of them.
It depends what is causing your sciatica. Usually the worst sciatica is when a buldging disc presses on the nerve in which case a surgery is the only option. Did the doctors say what caused the sciatica in your case. Do you have buldging discs? It is crucial to know it as the treatment will depend on this. If your sciatica is caused by muscles spasm a physiotherapy or an osteopath is the best answer. They do deep tissue massages to loosen the muscles. At home you can lay on tennis balls and put them where the pain is the biggest -this area is your trigger point. I really wish you good luck with it. My sciatica is lasting 7 months now but I am almost recovered. Don’t leave it like that! Have you had an MRI scan to exclude any discs involvement?
If my symptoms are solely a dull ache that can’t be stretched out directly in the middle of my buttocks. Both right and left, but more so on the left side and I don’t have ANY back pain- high or low. What do I more likely have Sciatica or Posterior Pelvic Pain???
ps- sitting for long periods seems to trigger it and I possibly even exercising. But definitely sitting for prolonged periods I notice triggers it. It isn’t unbearable just a dull ache in my glutes that feels like it could be stretched, but stretching doesn’t help too much. THANKS!!! 10 poionts
could really be either. True sciatica is less common in pregnancy than pelvic related pain- or so I read on babycenter. I would get an adjustment from a chiropractor and a good massage. Also calcium-magnesium supplement and lots of water could help.
Hi
I have suffered with Sciatica on and off for a few years and it has always affected the right side of my body, i.e. right side of lower back and right side of leg.
Since last October I have been suffering with the other side but the symptoms are not the same.
This time after sitting, there is a weakness in my left leg from around my hip / buttock and down around my shins. Sometimes I feel, particularly when walking upstairs, that my leg will not support me. I do not get this when getting up in a morning as previously, morning was my worst time, nor if I am sitting with my legs up on the sofa. It seems as it is the pressure from the seat of the chair pressing on the back of my my thigh when sitting which is causing the problem. If I take ibuprofen, I don’t feel it for a day or so but slowly it returns. It is worse if I wear shoes will heels.
I sit down a lot during the day at my job and I am aware that this is probably not helping. I need to take exercise which I do my using a treadmill but I find that I am not able to do this at the moment as it seems to make matters worse.
The other type of sciatica was caused by a nerve being pinched in my back, but if this is a form of sciatica, where is the nerve being pinched this time. It would be useful to know this as I can then apply treatment to that area (ice packs and heat etc).
I have had a couple of sessions with an osteopath and he has made sure that my back is moving freely but I am not sure what else I can do. When I stand and start to walk at first, I limp until my leg has got going.
I have had some tablets prescribed by my GP in the past which help but do these aid recovery or do they mask the pain? If they simply mask the pain I may as well stick to ibuprofen.
Can anyone offer any advice please?
Tony could be on the right track I’ve had both a bad back which I suffer from but it was really bad last week that was until I had a tooth out. I had an abscess on the root. My back ache has gone really it has, though I think it;’s partly due to the fact that I’ve been doing 30 mins a day on my treadmill at 3.0rpm. It helps enormously.
I have had three back operations in the passed and I find even though it hurts first off exercising walking seems to help. Ask your doctor for advice as you could have damaged reflexes in your right leg and you need to know that it is alright to go on your treadmill.
My own consultant and physio recommend it daily (walking that is ha ha).
Sorry its long.. but I need to explain..
So about 2 and a half years ago.. (I was 18) whilst at a party i did the splits.. and as i got up.. i had the symptoms of sciatica which lasted around a month! After the pain had gone.. a few months down the line the pain returned for a few more weeks.. and this has happened ever since… but the time between each ‘episode’ has shortened and the time i get the pain for has increased… the last major spell was christmas 2009, where i started having severe pain in my lower back (sciatica symptoms) this carried on over the following months.. and in february 2010 the pain became so severe that I was unable to walk for around 8 weeks.. i also had to get an ambulance one morning as I got stuck in bed in agony.
I have been to the doctors too many times.. i feel like a pain so i try not to go! I’ve been on various different tablets.. which work for a little while then become useless. I have been referred to a consultant twice.. first time when i went, i was not in pain so they discharged me! Second time was during the agony months.. and so I was sent for an MRI scan.. which came back perfectly clear with no problems so i was discharged..! (annoyed me as she sed theres nothin wrong with the scan bla bla.. as thats a good thing.. when i was thinkin well u should be finding out whats causing all this pain) I was also having physio.. and after not being able to walk properly for so long and going through so much pain, the pain eased and I have been ok for around 2/2and a half months.. but now the pain has come back with a vengence!
I am 20 years of age.. and what I have been through in the last 2 years is ridiculous! Im not sure how much more I can take and I want to know if any one else has been through similar, or if a doctor or someone can tell if there is something else wrong.. as surely i shouldn’t be going through this..

My doctor thinks I have sciatica.. I was previously diagnosed with Runner’s knee. After I looked up the symptoms for Runners knee I did not think thats what it was which is why I got a second opinion and he doesnt seem too sure either.. I have a lot of symptoms, but my legs (problems in both) hurt the worse when it was very cold outside and even made me limp one day because I had a pain in my hip. I also think caffeine makes it worse but I am not sure. I also have the feeling it could be related to my birth control (I know that causes clots) but I am not sure.. Any suggestions?
I am not sure that this is sciatica. Sciatica is a nerve pain similar to a toothache that runs down the back of your thigh, calf and sometimes into the foot. It is usually aggravated by bending or sitting. It is due to a pinched nerve in your lower (lumbar) spine and often there will be backache too.
If you are getting hip and knee pain, you may have some form of arthritis or bursitis.
When I was pregnant, I suffered from sciatica, but never got to the point of wanting or needing to get it treated. Now, I am having the same symptoms, but I’m NOT pregnant, and the pain is anywhere from moderate to SEVERE – a 10/10 on the pain scale! If you have dealt with this before, please help!
We have a large nerve bundle that runs from our hips to our heels. It is contained in a cartilage "tunnel" in the pelvic bone. Any sort of trauma from falling to pregnancy can bust open that "tunnel." There is no cure. When the weather is damp (low pressure system) it makes it even worse (pain). Sometimes a chiropractor can help the worst of the pain, and maybe acupuncture but I don’t believe it. It is something we have to suffer with the rest of our lives. : (
Ive been on it for nearly four years for my Sciatica come Arthritis, and wonder if it might harm my organs. Has anyone come off them and felt allot better (especially if you had a replacement drug that doesn’t make you tired). And does anyone else think they’ve have worse memory and concentration while taking them, or any other unwanted symptoms?
Co dydramol is basically paracetamol but should still be used with caution. Di hydrocodeine also contain paracetamol but also a high concentration of codeine which is an opiate and should not really be taken for a long term condition such as yours as they are a form of opiates and its very easy to become addicted to them. Have a word with your medical practitioner as I would have thought Ibuprofen more suitable for your conditions but you obviously need to speak to someone that knows your medical history. You can also try a topical medication-cream instead of increasing your tablets.
